Giving is Living Award Nominee: Vocational Visions + Electron Beam Engineering Partnership

Frances Trillwood (L) and sister Hilary Hurt
Richard Trillwood, E.B.E founder

Electron Beam Engineering was formed in 1991 by Richard Trillwood. Electron Beam Engineering provides precision electron beam welding and laser beam welding services throughout the United States and Europe. They specialize in working with complex components for a variety of applications, including aerospace, automotive, defense, communications, electronics, jewelry, medical, oil and gas exploration, semi-conductors, sensors, transportation and commercial uses. They are known for their outstanding quality and fast turnaround, and their technical staff is always available for consultation. They provide design assistance for all customers regarding their products including, but not limited to, the use of laser beam and electron beam welding.

Electron Beam Engineering’s (EBE) relationship began long ago. 29 years ago, to be exact. It all started when the owner of EBE became a board member of Vocational Visions back in 1991 when his daughter Frances enrolled in our Emeritus program. His dedication to our organization is one that we will never forget. The many volunteer hours he spent on the board, volunteering for many events, and monetary donations from not just his company, but also personal donations as well are something hard to forget. Before his passing in 2016, he brought his daughter, Hilary, onto Vocational Visions’ board in 2011 as part of the succession plan being a co-conservator of her sister who continues to be in our program. Both Hilary and her husband, Tom, are part owners of EBE, and they both have shown their commitment to Vocational Visions time and time again where they have volunteered at multiple events for many years. Hilary has carried on her father’s legacy by getting involved with our organization just as much as he did.

Giving is Living Award Nominee: Giving Children Hope + Vans Partnership

Giving Children Hope is proud to nominate Vans for the Giving is Living Award. Vans is built on a solid foundation of supporting youth and giving back to the community. Vans has supported Giving Children Hope’s mission to eliminate hunger and prevent homelessness by helping provide nutritious food to more than 1,400 food-insecure families in our We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB) program. For the past two years, Vans has supported families on our We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB) program who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Families in the program are identified by their school and signed up for WGYB at which point they will receive a backpack of food each week, enough to feed four individuals for at least three days. This results in 17 tons of food that must be sorted, packed, and delivered weekly to the children and families who need it most in Orange County.

To accomplish this, GCHope relies on volunteers to help make this program run. Vans has been an amazingly reliable partner who is consistently enthusiastic and ready to work. Their passion for Giving Children Hope’s mission is contagious and each time they volunteer, more and more of their employees share their experiences and promote their partnership on social media.

Vans has gone above and beyond the expectations of a corporate partner. Not only do they donate hundreds of backpacks, sweatshirts, hats, beanies, shoes and accessories to the children served by the WGYB program, but they also sponsor Christmas wish lists for 300 WGYB kids, providing gifts for each child!

Additionally, Vans has hosted food drives at two of their distribution centers and has donated 1,884 pounds of food including cereal which was very-much needed. Without partnerships like Vans, Giving Children Hope would not be able to serve the 1,400 plus families on the WGYB program. As the saying goes, it takes a village; Vans is a cornerstone of Giving Children Hope’s village, allowing the organization to better provide for the children they serve, helping them out of poverty, and into a more stable living situation. Giving is Living Award Nominee: Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) + Tito’s Handmade Vodka

Pacific Marine Mammal Center (PMMC) has nominated its partnership with Tito’s Handmade Vodka for the 2020 Giving is Living Awards. PMMC rescues, rehabilitates and releases marine mammals and inspires ocean stewardship through research, education and collaboration.

Tito’s has a long history of giving back to the community that goes back to the early days of Tito’s vodka business. As the company started to grow, Tito empowered each and every member of the team, regardless of their role, to support the causes they were passionate about in their local communities. Through its “Love, Tito’s” initiatives, the organization has supported thousands of causes, including protecting the environment we all share. The relationship with the regional team from Tito’s Handmade Vodka is one of the more extensive, if not the most, out of the dozens of Corporate Partnership programs that PMMC has. Because of the values that make up important pillars of both organizations, it was inevitable that a partnership was formed in 2017. It started off with a simple in-kind donation to PMMC’s Annual Golf Tournament to the much more in-depth partnership that they have today. Tito’s Handmade Vodka is committed to the mission of Pacific Marine Mammal Center, and their support manifests itself in several ways – direct financial support, in-kind product donations, and hands-on volunteering.

Ultimately, our relationship is measured by the ability at a broader level for PMMC to serve its patients, educate its youth, and contribute research to the scientific and general community. This was especially meaningful in 2019, which was the most collaborative year of the partnership. With Tito’s support, Pacific Marine Mammal Center responded and rescued 220 marine mammals, facilitated science-based education programs to close to 8,000 students through our work with approximately 150 schools and organizations within and outside of Orange County, and provided free, docent-guided tours to 50,000 individuals in their Visitor Yard. While Tito’s wasn’t the sole reason PMMC was able to make the impact that they did, it was an important relationship that was consistent throughout the year. And therefore, it was not a difficult decision for PMMC to nominate Tito’s, out of the 30 other businesses that they worked within this past year, for the Giving is Living Award. What separates Tito’s is that they are authentic in what they do, and they stretch out their support to the absolute max and in creative ways to make a difference in their communities. And for that, we honor them.

Giving is Living Award Nominee: Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Orange County + Stark

CASA of Orange County has nominated their partnership with Stark for the 2020 Giving is Living Awards. Stark is the only company in the health and fitness industry that provides a truly comprehensive approach to health and fitness, by combining exercise, nutrition, orthopedic care, naturopathic medicine, and cutting edge technology to provide individuals with a custom-tailored, in-depth solutions.

Stark’s partnership with CASA is multifaceted. In addition to financial contributions, Stark works alongside the CASA staff to educate them on the various components that make up a healthy lifestyle. Stark also provides workouts for advocates to attend with their youth, where they work directly with the children to teach them about exercise and healthy lifestyle choices. Additionally, Stark provides CASA’s CEO with services to ensure that she is performing at the highest level possible as a leader. Specifically during the COVID-19 quarantine, Stark has also been offering free Zoom exercise classes for CASA’s staff members.

There are also a number of Stark employees that volunteer in more traditional CASA roles—this includes board membership (Stark’s President, Todd Vande Hei), event committee participation, event day-of volunteerism, and court-appointed mentor-advocate volunteerism.

Since partnering with Stark, CASA staff, volunteers, and youth have benefitted from an increase in knowledge and understanding of health and wellness concepts that directly impact their wellbeing. Stark is also more than just a fitness and nutrition company, as they have knowledge in the areas of orthopedic care, naturopathic medicine, and cutting edge health and wellness technology, that makes their messaging unique and more beneficial for our staff, volunteers and foster youth.

As for lessons learned, Stark employees have developed a new perspective on life, through working with CASA’s foster youth. According to Tyler Mounce, “Any time you deal with foster youth, you realize what a marginalized population they are. So there’s always an element of gratitude that arises from any of the work we do with CASA. Additionally, because there is so much that is out of a foster child’s control, it’s crucial that we take care of our health, and help others do so, because we have the privilege to actually control that aspect of our lives.”

Giving is Living Award Nominee: Miracles for Kids + TRAFFIK Partnership

For the past decade, TRAFFIK, an Irvine-based award-winning advertising and marketing agency, has been a valued Miracles for Kids corporate partner supporting the organization through creative consulting, in-kind giving programs, volunteer days, and the sponsorship of key programs and events. Miracles for Kids is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission to improve the lives of critically-ill children and their families in need.

TRAFFIK has donated their expertise, time, and services to help shape today’s Miracles for Kids branding, website, and marketing initiatives. This creative partnership has included a complete rebranding campaign, a new modern immersive website (including ongoing technical support and annual refreshes), advertising campaigns and direction, new campaign project services, and on demand consulting services.

TRAFFIK takes their partnership with Miracles for Kids one step further by personally getting to know and connecting with the patient families of the organization. One way they’ve been able to do so is through the numerous donated video production projects TRAFFIK has completed for Miracles for Kids that showcase the organization’s story in a beautiful and compelling light. Through these projects, they’ve been able to interact with, interview, and build relationships with various families featured in videos, giving them a firsthand understanding of the impact Miracles for Kids truly has on the families served.

TRAFFIK is also a lead volunteer group for Baskets of Miracles – a delivery program that provides food, home goods, gifts and other household necessities to entire families who, as a result of their critically-ill child, are in financial and emotional crisis. At the 2019 Holiday Basket of Miracles program, TRAFFIK adopted 30 families, meaning they fully provided the much-needed items in the baskets for 30 families, and implemented a company-wide day of service dedicated to delivering the baskets to the adopted families during work hours. The entire TRAFFIK agency took part and hand-delivered baskets to families in Orange County, LA County, and the Inland Empire. Executive Director.

Through all of the services TRAFFIK has provided to Miracles for Kids, the organization has been able to reach a much larger number of supporters, donors, and partners. The relationships built with these influential members of the community directly benefit Miracles for Kids families because not only does it mean more monetary donations, but more supplies, more connections to the community, and more opportunities to help. Thanks to TRAFFIK, Miracles for Kids is better poised to reach more supporters and, in turn, help more children and their families in desperate need.
